Biography

Josh McCullar, RA, NCARB | Principal

Josh is a native of the Virginia Piedmont region and grew up in South Carolina and North Carolina where embedded remnants of old cotton mills, tobacco barns, railroad tracks, forests, rivers, and farms formed an abiding love of the land at an early age.

He studied architecture and environmental design at North Carolina State University’s School of Design, and then earned a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Virginia, studying under WG Clark, Charles Menefee, Peter Waldman, and Edward Ford.

After beginning his career with a year at the national firm of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in Pennsylvania, he moved to Richmond, Virginia and spent 13 years with two prominent Richmond firms before starting his own practice in 2016.

Over the past 22 years, Josh has worked on a range of public and private projects including: additions to the UVA School of Architecture, expansion of the modern wing at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Virginia War Memorial, restoration of Main Street Station train shed in downtown Richmond, buildings for universities, public libraries, sacred space, and numerous private residences.

Josh resides in eastern Goochland County where a full view of the night sky exists just 12 miles west of the urban center of Richmond. Outside of architecture, he enjoys small ongoing construction projects at home, tending to the landscape and garden, wineries, art, playing the piano, and visiting his family’s six-generation ancestral farm in North Carolina.

As a native southerner, he has mastered the lost art of afternoon “porch sitting”.
